Morning Pastries

You smell like bread in the mornings, something

I want to curl into. Rising yeast and cardamom

notes. It’s in the early hours when you’re sweetest, unable to open both eyes and black ribbons of hair break free from yesterday’s oil. Your heat bakes

into the blankets like an oven—that’s why

I come back after my tea, after the lemon squeezes,

after the first writings pour from my fingertips.

In tangled sheets and waves of duvets

I ride the surf into the morning sun with you,

tucked safe as a child in your arms.
